Judging hue, tone and saturation to perfection is an exercise that takes years and years of experience.
For example a high tonal quality such as Dark Green and poor Hue such as dull will not make the Emerald look beautiful whereas a Light Tonal quality with a high saturation can make an emerald look very beautiful, vibrant and full of life.
The second most important factor in judging best quality emerald gemstones is the clarity. Clarity is the degree of transparency that is directly proportional to the lack of inclusions in the gemstones. The GIA- Gemmological Institute of America classifies Emerald as a TYPE 3 gemstone- a type that is almost always included. Around 99% of emeralds have inclusions called as Jardines that look like Gardens or Branches and prove that the Emerald is natural. One should become very cautious if one sees an exceptionally clean emerald. If such is the case most often than not either the clarity has been enhanced or it’s not an emerald al all.
Best Quality Emerald clarity ranges from 85% and above. A natural Emerald that has the clarity of 85% and above will for less than 2% of all natural emeralds mined and produced. The lesser the inclusions the higher the price and value of the emerald and as clarity levels rise from 85% and higher it is directly proportional to increase in the price. Placement of inclusions that affect clarity is also a very important factor in judging Emerald Clarity and Emerald Quality.
A Good Gemologist will always try to select an Emerald where the inclusions are in inconspicuous places within the crystal and are not very visible. An inclusion right on the face of the Emerald will reduce its clarity rating.
The third important factor is judging the best quality Emeralds is the carat weight. The unit of measurement of gemstone weight is the” Carat” and 1 carat is equivalent to .20 grams.
To obtain 1 carat of Gem quality Emerald one has to mine and process 5 tonnes of dust and ore.
To obtain a single piece of 2 carats will require that much more processing and that is why as carat weight goes up with color and clarity remaining the same the value of the Emerald shoots up by geometrical progression. A 5 carat Emerald will cost maybe 5 times or more than 5 emeralds of 1 carat each provided they are” Gem Quality”
