Presence of two color shades which is generally found in commercial quality stones devalues a gemstone. Blue Sapphire with a pure hue of Blue followed by slight shades of violet is considered to be good quality in Sapphires. Top shades of a Blue sapphire are classified as Cornflower Blue, Royal Blue, Electric Blue and Silky deep blue.  If the sapphire has a tint of green or a huge amount of purple tint it costs lesser and is considered of a lower quality.

Clarity- The second consideration when grading the best quality Blue Sapphire is the clarity. Clarity is directly proportional to transparency and the more clear a Blue Sapphire is it will be more brilliant, dazzling and sparkling. Aim for Eye clean clarity. Minor inclusions like silk or feathers that are not on the face of the gemstone but somewhere on the edges or are inconspicuous actually add value to the Blue sapphire. Fine Silk is almost a feature of majority of the Kashmir Sapphires. The fine silk actually adds to the allure of the fine velvety silk blue colour of the Kashmir Sapphires. Too much of silk will devalue a gemstones as it makes the sapphire appear to be grey.

Cut- The third consideration while grading the best quality in Blue Sapphire is the cut. In general the most valued cuts in Blue Sapphires are ovals and cushions followed by rounds and in some cases even the emerald cut is also seen. A good cut ensures that there is good symmetry that ensures maximum play of light so that the Blue Sapphire looks brilliant, dazzling and full of life as light passes through its various facets. Poor and commercial quality Blue sapphires are cut to retain weight. This devalues the quality and this quality of junk stones is basically sold in volume driven markets.

Origin- It’s an important consideration. The top three more preferred origins for a Blue Sapphire are Kashmir, Burma and Ceylon/ Sri Lanka. Blue Sapphires from these origins command more price and value as compared to other regions.
