Today marks the auspicious occasion of Chhat Puja—a day when we honor the Sun God, Surya, and his divine sister, Chhati Maiyya.
This powerful tradition, celebrated primarily in the Indian states of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Nepal, is a profound reminder of the cosmic forces that govern our lives.
But what truly captivates me is the underlying beauty of Sanatana Dharma, Vedic astrology, and our eternal Sanatan culture, which reveals its depth here:
Chhat Puja is observed when the Sun is in its “weakest” phase astrologically, in 
Libra, a sign of its debilitation.
Yes, imagine this—the Sun, at its lowest point, still loses nearly 4.3 million tons/ 6000 billion kg’s (4.3 billion kilograms) of mass every second.
This mass loss, through the Sun’s incredible nuclear fusion process, is converted into pure energy, radiating as the sunlight and warmth that reach us on Earth.
This light nourishes all life, sustaining our ecosystems, guiding our cycles, and providing us with the energy essential for survival.
Such is the essence of the Sun’s strength, even in debilitation, that it still bestows life, energy, and resilience.
There is wisdom here, a quiet whisper in the cosmic order:
“Appear strong when weak, appear weak when strong, but do appear.”

As I reflect on Chhat Puja, my thoughts travel to the beautiful land of Suriname.
Wuite Recently, I had the profound honor of being recognized and honoured by H.E. Ambassador Aroenkoomar Hardien at the Embassy of Suriname in India.
During this gathering, I was humbled to be accorded the honour & the title of “Jagat Guru”—a Guru of the Universe.
The honor reminded me of the powerful cultural threads that connect us, transcending oceans and continents.
Suriname is a land that has carried the essence of the Sanatana tradition across vast distances.
The people of Suriname hold deep respect for Hinduism, astrology, and the power of gemstones.
Many families in Suriname celebrate Chhat Puja with the same devotion and love, praying to Chhati Maiyya for the health, safety, and blessings of their children, this tradition is also followed in India & Nepal.
This devotion mirrors the same sacred rituals we perform in India, a testimony to the enduring power of faith across generations and lands.
The Ancient Legends of Chhat Puja
The beauty of Chhat Puja is enriched by the timeless stories that surround it. Allow me to share three ancient tales that give this festival its deep spiritual foundation:
Karna’s Devotion: In the epic Mahabharata, Karna, the son of Surya and Kunti, was known for his steadfast devotion to his father. Daily, he would stand in water and offer prayers to the Sun, a ritual believed to have inspired the water-based offerings in Chhat Puja. His unwavering dedication to Surya reminds us of the powerful bond between humans and the cosmos.
Draupadi and the Pandavas: During their exile, Draupadi and the Pandavas observed Chhat Puja to overcome the hardships they faced. Their devotion to Surya brought them resilience and eventually helped them regain their kingdom, showing us how divine blessings can pave the way through life’s challenges.
Lord Rama and Sita’s Gratitude: After their return to Ayodhya and victory over Ravana, Lord Rama and Sita performed the Chhat rituals to express their gratitude to Surya and Chhati Maiyya. This gesture of devotion is believed to have laid the foundation for the Chhat Puja we celebrate today, a timeless practice of gratitude and reverence.

On this sacred day, as we honor Surya Dev and Chhati Maiyya, let us remember our brothers and sisters in Suriname, their unwavering faith, and the shared cosmic bond that keeps us all illuminated, despite life’s challenges .
