The first auspicious bathing day, known as Paush Purnima, occurs today.

While the primary Shahi Snan (Royal Bath) is scheduled for Makar Sankranti on January 14, 2025, Paush Purnima holds its own significance as it marks the beginning of the Kalpavas period, during which devotees engage in rigorous spiritual practices.

These rigorous spiritual practices will culminate on the Maha Shivratri on Feb 26th.

The Legend of Kumbh Mela

The origins of the Kumbh Mela are deeply rooted in the ancient Hindu legend of the Samudra Manthan—the churning of the cosmic ocean. According to this story:

 The Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) churned the ocean to obtain Amrita, the nectar of immortality.

 Amidst the churning, a pot (Kumbh) containing the nectar emerged.

 A fierce battle ensued between the Devas and Asuras for its possession, lasting 12 divine days (equivalent to 12 human years).

 Drops of nectar fell at four sacred locations: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nashik, which became the venues for the Kumbh Mela.

During the churning, divine treasures (Ratnas) also emerged:

 Kaustubha Mani: The gemstone adorning Lord Vishnu’s chest, symbolizing divine wisdom.

 Parijata Tree: The celestial wish-fulfilling tree, representing abundance.

 Kamadhenu: The divine cow, a symbol of nourishment and sustenance.

 Chandra (Moon): A symbol of beauty, calmness, and emotional balance, placed on Lord Shiva’s forehead. Very important today especially for the Lunar Ray Bath Ritual.

 Halahala (Poison): Consumed by Lord Shiva, representing endurance in the face of adversity.

These treasures remind us of life’s duality: that even amidst challenges, immense rewards can emerge.

How to observe Shakambari Poornima:
