One night an individual dear to our beloved Guruji Shrii Arnav was faced with this situation and raised this question to his grace. Here are some basic pointers that will help when (because it’s not a question of ‘if’) you get into such situation.

First things first if a Gem gets lost and believe me it happens all the time. One day you see it and the other day you don't it means it has completed its job with you and it’s time to move on.
Just Imagine from all of earth's precious reserves only A particular Gem reached you. That is predestined and that's why we say "A Gem is for a Gem".
Amongst all the Gems, the 2 gems that most frequently get lost are - Emerald and a Real Pearl.
Because they are super absorbers of anything negative coming towards you or anything negative inside you. These two gems are strong antidotes to poison and pain whether physical or emotional or at a soul level.
The stronger the negative emotion or pain, the Stronger the efficiency of the Gem to remove it and the faster it gets lost.

I remember my first Emerald in a Gold ring that was bought by my mother for me for health reasons.
One day early morning while riding pillion with my dear friend and going to coaching class I just raised my arms, Held palms together, Stretched my spine and shoulders- Typical posture to shoo away lethargy.
As my palm locked open I could sense the Emerald ring slipping away and then I heard the clinking sound of metal hitting the road.
I asked my friend to stop the bike and we searched that small stretch for a good 60 odd minutes.
No sign of it. I was pretty much distraught but with it went away bronchitis, inhalers and allergies.
My Guru asked me to wear a new one immediately.
Since then and until today I keep losing Emeralds all the time since a lot of my work is energy work and in most of the cases sometimes I have to absorb or remove negative energy since in majority of the cases people come to me in problems or obstacle like solutions.
What Happens when a Gemstone Gets Damaged?
This is a case which is different from the lost case above. This is a rare case where the Gemstone has taken a forceful negative impact on itself to save and protect you such as from a disease or an accident.
Many Years ago there was a Scrap dealer in Mumbai buying stuff from Rag-pickers and old newspaper collectors. My Guru advised him to wear a Blue Sapphire with a typical shade. The rise that he had after wearing that Neelam (Blue Sapphire) was unprecedented. In 3 short years He went from Rag-picking business to be Asia's largest distributor of a certain popular pen brand and ink. He remained humble and was in love with his Blue Sapphire. Along with prosperity came helicopters, foreign investments, bullet proofed armoured cars etc.
One day he had to attend a wedding in the small town of Ajmer and he decided to drive down to Ajmer to Jaipur in his brand new Mercedes S class with his family (Wife and 2 Kids)
Unfortunately they had a massive accident on the highway with a truck and his family was killed on the spot.
The car was smashed but miraculously nothing much happened to the man.
He was admitted in the ICU and when he got is senses back the first thing he asked was for my Guru.
As Guruji consoled him he eyes stuck on the Blue Sapphire ring and he examined it. It was Khandit (Broken) right in the center.
Guruji told him that the Gem had taken the ghaat (Near death inflicting power) and had saved him. He asked him to immediately remove it and offer it in a source of water and left.

Long story short: Whether you call it greed, Love for the Gem or superstition or something else, The Man was not yet ready to part with the Blue Sapphire. He had the strong mental connection that his unprecedented meteoric rise was due to the Neelam.
To cut a long story short... He was harassed by Government agencies, tax department, enemies and lost the license of the pen distributorship.
In midst of rising problems he again called Guruji who said you are still carrying the Neelam- aren't you in your shirt pocket? He was shocked and answered in the affirmative.
Guruji repeated his advice and off that man went in public transport (BEST BUS) to marine drive and offered the Gem to the ocean with prayers and apologies.
What happens if a Gemstone Gets Stolen?
This is the deadliest scenario for the thief. I will not expand on this but even if you get a million dollar diamond lying on the street, don't ever think of taking it.
Take the legal route deposit it to the right agency or donate it.
Astrological Factors for changing/ upgrading Gemstone:
If you have faced any of the situations above then consult your Guru/ Astro-Gemologist and ask if you need to replace the Gem or Not.
Advanced users of Gem Therapy can keep upgrading the Gem if they feel that the Gem has given them enough and if they need more power.
Economical Factor of Gem Upgrade:
If a Gem is suiting you then within 1 day to 1 year it will recover its cost several times over by making good events in your life including financial ones. This should not be a limiting factor. This is not like printer- cartridge business where you buy a printer one time and have to keep buying cartridges the whole life. You will upgrade the Gem maybe 4-5 times your active life so go ahead- You Deserve it.
When to upgrade Jyotish Gemstones:
Advanced user of Gem therapy keep upgrading their gems and skills every 15-20 months. However if you are not in the fast lane yet below are the timelines when the Gem should be upgraded after the first time of wearing.
Ruby, Yellow Sapphire, Blue Sapphire: 5 years
Emerald: 3-5 years
Red Coral, Hessonite, Cat's Eyes: 3 years
Diamond: 7 years
Natural Pearl: 2 years- 2 months-27 days
All Semi precious Gems /Uparatnas: 3 years
In this business and journey of life there will be ups and downs but your Gem is your most intimate friend. In your bad time it will protect you and in your good time it will propel you. So Love your friend.
